The Elephant Man is a 1980 movie directed by David Lynch released by Paramount Pictures in the United States and Universal Pictures internationally. Mel Brooks was an uncredited executive producer which was a request from Mel Brooks so that people wouldn't mistake it for a comedy film. The film is based off of Joseph Merrick (or as the movie calls him John Merrick and most likely named that in the movie because Frederick Treves put that in his book about him) and stars John Hurt as the title role and Anthony Hopkins as Frederick Treves. The film was a critical and commercial success and was nominated for 8 academy awards including Best Picture.
